Twisted, curved, curled and mixed with glass and wood - Peter Shepherd is fulfilling a dream to work creatively with metal.

He's done farm work, engineering and painted houses in the past. He learned to work with metal in Dannevirke, it's a great medium, he said.

"You can bend it and manipulate it. You can pretty much do what you want with it."

He has always wanted to go free-form with iron, and has been storing up design ideas for years. After designing, making and selling from home for a few years, he and wife Debby bought a workshop and showroom in Heads Rd nine months ago. Mr Shepherd uses the workshop to do basic engineering work as well. The decorative work is what he loves though.

He said it was selling well, and he was hoping to do more and more of it. Wrought iron "pretty much lasts forever", he said. It can have a galvanised finish, or be powder-coated into a matt black.

He uses local wood for table and bench tops, and imports some of the decorative elements from Italy.

He said he could make pieces to people's designs, and he also designs his own shapes and adds decorative copper, glass and wooden elements.

Free security gates in York City's west end cut down on crime

It's been nearly two years since Leocadia Almeyda has been forced to deal with drug dealers lurking in the breezeway of her home -- and since she's had to clean up trespassers' litter and wash urine from the passageway that leads to her back yard.
"There are a lot of people who don't live here, but who come around here to do drugs," she said.
The 66-year-old woman has owned her home in the 600 block of West Princess Street since 1987.
"It was beautiful then," Almeyda said. "It was mostly elderly folks. People would say hello to you."
But that's changed. Over the years, drug dealers started hanging out, absentee landlords bought many of the houses, and litter became an everyday nuisance, she said.
Almeyda said that's why she jumped at the chance, a little less than two years ago, to have a wrought-iron gate and lock installed at the front entrance of her breezeway.
It didn't cost her a penny, she said, but it's paid big dividends.
Gates are free: About two dozen of her neighbors also had the free breezeway gates installed, and Almeyda said it's made a noticeable difference.
"The gates help a lot because they prevent people from going through, and keep
them from doing drugs there," she said. "I'm very pleased."
The project -- a partnership between York City, the Women's Giving Circle and the Salem Square Neighborhood Association -- also installed hundreds of lights in the area, according to Lise Levin, chair of the Women's Giving Circle's York City safety committee.
Now, the partnership has plans to install 300 more free wrought-iron gates and locks in York City's west end.
"We are focusing initially on the 400 to 700 block of West Princess Street," Levin said. "Then we will move out from that point and eventually cover between Richland Avenue and Penn Street, and between Market Street and College Avenue."

Permission sought: York City Police Chief Wes Kahley said it's a huge undertaking, and the city has already obtained homeowner data for the area.
Canvassers will be knocking on residents' homes and contacting landlords, seeking permission to install the gates, Kahley said.
"The police and volunteers will literally go door-to-door to every one of the 300 houses ... to talk to the residents and landlords about partnering with us," Levin said, noting that begins this week.
"We'd love for everyone to participate," Kahley said.
When canvassers get no answer at homes, they will leave door hangers with information about the program, printed in English and Spanish, said Delaine Toerper of the Salem Square Neighborhood Association.
Chief: Gates work: The gates don't merely block access to hiding places, Kahley said -- they also block escape routes, making the area less attractive for the criminal element.
"It's definitely made it a little easier to capture the people we were looking for," he said. "We've seen a positive effect from these gates."

The Hancock County Schools Board of Education will have a groundbreaking at 1 p.m. Tuesday in anticipation of the start of construction on the OGHS athletic complex to be paid with bond levy money.
At 11 a.m. Saturday, the OGHS Class of 2011 will have a dedication-ribbon cutting for the completed gateway. Joey Davis, president of the Class of 2011, said crews will complete the work this week with installation of an iron gate, fence and landscaping.
The Field of Dreams is the baseball and softball complex adjacent to the middle school and high school, completion of which is included in the bond levy package. The total cost for all projects district wide is $56 million, including $19 million set aside by the School Building Authority for a new Weirton Elementary.

The first iron fences came to America from England during the colonial period, and guarded upper-class homes, churches or public buildings. By the turn of the century, American blacksmiths got the knack of producing this kind of fence, themselves. The material was termed "wrought iron" because it was "wrought," or worked, on a forge.
By the mid-1800s, cast-iron fences could be mass-produced with melted iron poured into molds. These became especially popular, painted either black or dark green, around Victorian homes in American cities. Iron and iron-look fences still seem most appropriate surrounding colonial or 19th-century houses — in a simpler style for the former and more ornate for the latter.

"There’s still quite a few of us out there" who offer older-style iron fences, said Anthony of Paterson Railing and Iron works, Paterson (201-615-5066). "We do both railing and fences. We do restoration, too, when something is rusted out or loose."

He noted that his products are a heavier-grade material than those offered by most fencing companies. "Some come in boxes and just bolt and screw together," he explained. "Ours are welded — you have a section and a metal post, and at each post connection, you weld."

Iron Rod

An iron rod is a length of iron that is mainly used in heavy construction projects. Reinforced concrete is intertwined with iron rods, also called rebar, to strengthen the tension of the build. An iron rod can be purchased with or without a ribbed design. Construction-grade iron rods are primarily used in construction or building projects, but a wrought-iron rod can be used in various types of decorative art projects.

Iron is one of the 92 basic elements that are considered "natural," meaning they're not manmade; iron is identified by the symbol "Fe" and has an atomic number of 26. It is hardly ever found in a pure iron form, though there have been pure iron meteorites found. Iron is usually mined in the form of an oxidized or sulfide form of iron ore. The iron ore has to go through a process of reduction to be transformed into a pure metallic state. This reduction process basically takes the oxygen out of the ore and makes it pure.

Wrought iron is a fibrous metal that is soft and easily worked. It has a grainy look, almost like wood. The word "wrought" basically means “worked.” Blacksmithing is a form of iron and steel work that uses what is called a forging process. Forging is started by heating the wrought-iron rod or steel and then working it with a hammer and other tools to bend, cut and flatten the iron rod to a desired shape.

Wrought iron is produced by using a process known as smelting. The operation of smelting involves heating the iron ore with charcoal. At a proper temperature, the charcoal mixes with the oxygen and rises out of the iron as a gas. The remaining iron and slag are then removed while still hot. They are worked with a hammer, which works the iron into a consistent mass and forces out the slag.

Wrought iron is so expensive to produce that it is no longer made on a large scale; true wrought iron is now primarily used in conservation to keep historical sites authentic, and the iron is formed from recycled scrap. Most items considered wrought iron in the early 21st century are actually made of mild steel. It is still called wrought iron because it is still worked by hand. Before the switch to mild steel, wrought iron was used to make nails, rivets, chains, nuts, bolts and ornamental ironwork.

Wrought iron arches

While many wrought iron arches are no longer made from true wrought iron, the classic looks of the metal remain. Many modern wrought iron arches are actually made from some sort of steel, though it is possible to still purchase a true wrought iron arch. The cost will be significantly higher, as the real metal is much harder to find than less expensive steel. True wrought iron will resist corrosion, but less expensive steel arches that are marketed as wrought iron can rust over time and exposure to the elements.

Wrought iron arches come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and they can be placed throughout a yard or garden to add a new aesthetic to the space. Some arches are meant to bear a load, though not too much weight should be placed on an iron arch. Arches made of steel, especially thinner steel, are prone to bending and can bear only a small amount of weight. It is common to allow creeping vines to cling to wrought iron arches, further adding to the aesthetic of a yard or garden. Just about all arches can handle such a load, though heavier loads such as certain light fixtures or other garden accessories should be avoided unless the arch is stable and thick enough to handle it.

True wrought iron is quite strong and resistant to weathering, making it a great choice for outdoor landscapes. True wrought iron arches can also be welded into many decorative designs; trellises can be welded into an arch, providing a simple and elegant design for a garden or yard. Some wrought iron arch options contain ornate designs beyond a simple trellis design. Still other arches made of true wrought iron can be built into a larger structure such as a porch or gazebo, and an extended arch may contain handrails or lead into an elaborate wrought iron gazebo.

Some sidewalk wrought iron arches feature planters or supports for flower boxes. This allows decorative flowers and boxes to be placed directly into the iron arch. The arch itself is specifically designed to support the weight of such accessories, as are sturdier arches that feature wrought iron benches for sitting. The weight of such an arch will be significantly higher, regardless of whether the arch is a true wrought iron arch or a steel arch made to appear as such.
